This is a very flavourful, delicious vegetarian dish.
Serve with some rice and a salad for a complete meal!
1 cup channa dal or yellow split peas
2 Tbsp minced garlic
2 cups chopped tomatoes
2 Tbsp minced ginger
2 Tbsp cumin seed
1 tsp coriander seed
1 small green chile, seeded and chopped
1 tsp salt
1 Tbsp mustard oil-optional
3 Tbsp butter(ghee) or oil
2 tsp black mustard seed
10 curry leaves
5 whole cloves
1 large red onion, thinly sliced
Big handful of lightly chopped cilantro
Wash the dal a few times, drain and put in a large pot.
Add 4 cups water and turn the heat to high.
Add garlic, tomatoes, ginger, cumin, coriander, chile and salt.
Bring to a boil, cover and cook over medium heat for 40-45 minutes. Maintain a lazy bubble.
Halfway through the cooking time check for seasoning and adjust(salt, chile, spices).
Cook to the consistency you prefer. If cooking until thick be sure to lower the heat at the end to prevent sticking.
Remove from heat and set aside.
Heat the oil and/or butter in a medium fry pan.
Add dry spices and onions, cook quickly over a high heat to extract the aromas and cook the onion.
Stir the cilantro into the dal and pour the fried onions and spices over top.
