The Table Community Food Centre is looking for a dynamic and community-oriented individual with strong communication and community organizing skills to join our staff team on a permanent, full-time basis to take on the role of Social Justice and Advocacy Coordinator.  They will take the lead role in developing and implementing The Table’s programs that support individuals with issues beyond immediate food access, and programs that work towards broader community, and regional change to reduce food insecurity and poverty.

Terms of Service
This is a permanent position that can be 4 or 5 days a week with an annual salary of $45,000/year, pro-rated if hours are less than 37.5 / week. Early to mid-August is the preferred start time for the position.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the delivery of a community action training program designed to build the capacity of community members to become effective change-makers through individual coaching and group workshops.
  • Coordinate, support and supervise our team of Community Navigators.
  • In collaboration with Administrative Navigator, ensure that existing Advocacy Office procedures are followed and further develop as needed with team of Navigators.
  • Coordinate training opportunities for Navigators in collaboration with Administrative Navigator
  • Support our Lanark County Community Action Network (LCCAN) in developing and implementing community engagement, educational, and political advocacy activities and campaigns associated with food security, poverty and social justice.
  • In conjunction with the Community Navigators, LCCAN, and other Table staff members, implement workshops and training opportunities for the Navigators, LCCAN members and wider community.
  • Network and build connections with other agencies and community groups to support the Table’s programming.
  • Contribute to and apply The Table’s evolving approaches to programming, communications and organizational development that are anti-oppressive/anti-racist, trauma-informed and body positive.
  • Actively participate in program evaluation.
  • Record and review program-statistics and other quantitative and qualitative measures of program impacts.
  • Regularly contribute information, stories, images or other content about the Social Justice and Advocacy programs and related topics to The Table’s e-news and social media feeds.
  • Develop and monitor program plans and budgets
  • Develop funding proposals, and write reports to funders as required
  • Participate in broader activities at The Table including: planning, fundraising, policy development, special events and team building activities.

Preferred qualifications

  • A passion for social justice and community organizing
  • Knowledge of the resources and social service agencies available to people in Lanark County
  • Knowledge of and experience navigating social assistance programs
  • An understanding of individual and systemic causes of food-insecurity and poverty, and mechanism to address them through individual and collective action
  • Supervisory and team building experience
  • Demonstrated abilities in adult education, popular education and group facilitation
  • Strong written, verbal and social media communication skills
  • Strong computer skills, including videoconferencing platforms such as Zoom, MS Office and Google Suite
  • An independent work ethic and ability to constructively work in a team-environment
  • Experience and/or education related to community organizing, social services work, social justice education, community development and/or community engagement
